Saturday started in a very unusual way. Last Thursday, news reached the corps that a loyal fan had passed away. His last wish was the Beatrix’ would accompany him on the way to his final resting place. The members headed to the Amerpoort in Baarn to honour this wish, and escorted Martin from his home to the nearby church playing cheerful music.
At 14:30 the corps was back in the hall and were very grateful to the bar committee who had prepared lunch. Half an hour later the rehearsal began, and the corps started working in sections. The hornline and battery each worked on Movement III and the front ensemble spent some time with Henk Rosendal to fine-tune the second part of the show.
At 16:30 the ensemble rehearsal was started. Movement II begins with an 8-bar pit feature, during which the front ensemble members can show off what they are capable of this year. A combo of brass players joins in playing, and brass voices are subtly added during the course of the piece. Some members had to wait quite a while before they finally had the chance to play. The phrase builds up to a tremendous climax, a true goose-bump moment in the production, and ends peacefully with the words “Dear Old Shiz.”
The next ensemble rehearsal will take place on February 20th in Sports Hall ‘De Meent’ in Hilversum. Here, Movement II will be put into ensemble for the first time between 12:30 and 16:30.
