Normally Jong Beatrix rehearses on Tuesday. Last Tuesday, however, was different: Hilversum’s four-evening march started that evening. Four-evening marches are an annual Dutch tradition during which residents walk a given distance during four evenings. The march is usually attended by large crowds in each town, and goes coupled with singing and other festivities.
Many Jong Beatrix members participated in the walk through Hilversum. Participants could choose one of three distances to walk: 5, 10 or 15 kilometers. Every year the march is guided by Frans. The Banjo that he normally carries was missing this year, but his voice was present. Many songs where sang and the evenings where all a lot of fun.

The members could only walk for two evenings this year, because on Thursday the corps welcomed the march in Laren and Friday they did the same in Hilversum. It is strange to welcome the crowd instead of walking in it. You can’t sing and need to walk in march in time. Parents were lined up at the side of the road with candy and umbrellas and all sorts of flowers. The music was well appreciated and the weather was excellent.
Friday was a great evening too. This evening the marathon wasn’t only welcomed by Jong Beatrix but also by the senior Beatrix’ Drum & Bugle Corps. At the assembly point this made for a great musical atmosphere. Jong Beatrix was the fourth corps in the parade and the audience was once again very enthusiastic. Alderman Boog introduced the corps in the Kerkbrink shopping area. Through the centre of Hilversum the parade marched to the finish. The tunnel under the train station has been the favorite percussion spot for years, simply because it is the loudest spot!
At the end of the march all participants received a medal. Afterwards everyone went home because the next day a long rehearsal was planned. Jong Beatrix will perform at the DCN Contest in Huizen on Saturday June26th.
